Nikka Taketsuru 12 Year Old Japanese Whisky (with Box) – Now Discontinued
The 12 year old variant of Nikka’s incredible range of blended malts, named after the company’s founder, Masataka Taketsuru. Very good indeed
Made from the blending of the two distilleries of Yoichi and Miyagikyo, this whisky was the pride of its creator Mastaka Taketsuru, founder of Nikka and father of Japanese whisky.
Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt 12 Year Old gets its distinct aroma and body from direct-heating distillation, in which the pot stills are heated with finely powdered natural coal. The other malt source that contributes to Taketsuru is from Sendai Miyagikyo Prefecture on Honshu. Clean air, perfect storage humidity and abundant underground water, filtered through a layer of peat produce a soft and mild malt It is the traditional method, one that is hardly ever employed today, even in Scotland.
But by the same token, no blended Scotch tastes quite like this, nor comes quite so close to the exquisite balance of the finest single malts of Scotland. Pure malt it is – and fine.
Pour Nikka Taketsuru 12 Year Old Pure Malt and one is immediately (and pleasantly) assailed by notes of fruity, plummy jam, the aroma of freshly-cut herbs, vanilla, plus an eye-opening wafture of coffee, all born along on a hint of smoke.
The taste is outstanding and unique. Sweet with a hint of apple cider, cinnamon, toffee, almond, with a buttery, almost creamy finish. But my words won’t suffice. There is an essential uniqueness to this Japanese dram.
It finishes cleanly, after a dramatic finale of earthy, fruited fire.
